Glados hadn’t really meant what she said. The fact of the matter was, his father had made a lot of mistakes during his reign. He had pushed the people of this land to the brink of war on two occasions. He had exhausted almost all of the royal funds. Royal opinion was very low. So, she had no choice but to view all of his decisions as potentially insidious, at best, ridiculous. She was glad she’d poisoned him. Enough was enough. Glados cared about the kingdom of Aperture more than her own life. She looked this knight up and down one last time. Chell at least seemed to have more wits about her than the other knights. “The kingdom is once more on the brink of war. Whilst I get things back into order, I need to know that the castle is being protected. So I’m handing that position over to you. But not before I really test your skills.” Glados looked out of the window towards the distant mountain. “They say that a single rose bush stands at the top of that mountain. Prove it to me. Travel to the top and bring me down one of the roses. I’ll know if you did, as blue roses are very rare and the only bush that has them is on that mountain.” Glados smiled, but it wasn’t particularly kind. “Take whatever equipment you need, and a companion if you wish. If you haven’t finished within two weeks, I’ll assume you failed.” She waved a hand in dismissal.
Chell was surprised by the request, but grateful for the chance to prove herself. She bowed deeply as she silently accepted this quest, and gave her deep, heartfelt gratitude that she should be allowed to show her new Queen the strength and devotion that had come to set her apart as the late King’s favourite, and given her a place of honour in His personal guard.
Her Majesty would see when she presented Her the rose that Chell was worthy of Her trust, and more than capable of protecting all that was good and valuable. No matter how difficult the journey, nothing in the world would be enough to stop Chell from reaching the top of that mountain, this she silently swore.
Two weeks. That was what she had. She left the room with dignity, but as soon as she was out of the Queen’s presence, it took just about all Chell had not to break into a sprint. She had two weeks to work with, and no time at all to prepare. Optimally, she’d need to get this done within one week, but as well and good as that was in theory, she knew perfectly well that the mountain had a reputation for being treacherous, and many rumours about strange noises and beasts, twisting thorns and lost travelers.
Going it alone was foolishness, but she wasn’t sure who she could trust to accompany her on such a quest. She had to move quickly, directing servants to collect supplies for her while she took on her armor and her sword. Her mind was racing. Who could come along with her? Sir Melanie, perhaps? Sir Richard?
